Backyard Wildlife Pond: June 19, 2026, 9:45
Species Observed:
- Figeater Beetle (Cotinis mutabilis)
- Umber Skipper (Lon melane)
- Western Yellowjacket (Vespula pensylvanica)
- Black and Yellow Mud Dauber (Sceliphron caementarium)
Once the sun is out, mud daubers and yellowjackets frequently visit the backyard wildlife pond. The mud dauber comes to collect perfect spheres of mud to build her nest, and the yellowjackets come to gather water for their own nest. Both insects are very peaceful around the pond, and today even three yellowjackets ended up at the pond at the same time. The mud dauber is easily spooked by sudden movements but quickly returns to her task. She was using the branch placed in the pond as a landing spot. As shown in the photo, her long yellow legs create a recognizable figure when in flight.
The newest visitor to the pond is the umber skipper. I spotted two hanging around yesterday, but I finally got a picture today. This is likely a male defending its territory from another, as he chases the other before returning to rest in the sun. As seen in the photo, one of his wings appears slightly damaged. Despite his injuries, he appears perfectly capable of standing his ground. The figeater beetle is a common visitor to my backyard. Today I spotted one on the ground and took a quick picture.
